History
Although the national breed of France, the Poodle actually originated in Germany where it was used as a water retriever. Many believe the name “Pudel” comes from the German word “pudel” which means “one who plays in water.”

In fact, the famous “Poodle Clip” was created by hunters to help the breed swim faster and more efficiently. The clip was not created as a decorative element. It was created to protect certain vital organs and joints of the breed in cold water.

The term “French Poodle” comes from France’s capitalization of the breed’s intelligence, trainability and eagerness to perform. The French turned poodles into popular circus performers where they gained notoriety and became Louis XVI and Queen Anne’s court favorites. They have long since been associated with royalty. Luxating patella is one of the most common knee joint abnormalities in dogs. Also called trick knee, subluxation of patella or floating patella, luxating patella is a condition in which the patella or kneecap dislocates and moves out of its normal location. This patella or kneecap should be located in the center of the knee joint but moves out of place because of traumatic injury or congenital deformities. Sometimes, only one knee is involved, but this disease can affect both knees. Toy and miniature dog breeds especially Toy Poodles are more likely to develop luxating patella. Standard poodles are so versatile. Do you need a service dog, or guard dog, or hunting dog? Standard Poodles are a high energy, highly intelligent breed that require daily exercise and mental stimulation. They thrive in the company of people and should be considered members of the family. Standard poodles are not as active indoors as the other two breeds, but will still do ok with apartment living as long as they are exercised. They are not incredibly picky about exercise, but will be happier if taken for walks or allowed to run in a small yard.

Standard Poodles are a lot less likely to bite than Minis or Toys, but all Poodles should be trained and socialized at an early age. When I first started my cartoons, I was thinking of dogs. It was going to be a totally dog cartoon. but the more dog cartoons I created, the more I wanted to do cats, and relationships, and people, and science, ad nauseum. Oddly enough, after I opened my gift and collectible store, and tarted getting more and more emails from poodle owners and lovers wanting to know if I could kindly put up more poodle-oriented merchandise I finally did, but first, I felt compelled to learn the history of the poodle.
