Leopard geckos are very interesting animals which make fascinating pets. While leopard geckos generally have a yellow coloring with black spots, they have been bred to exhibit a wide variety of different patterns and colors. Some gecko breeders have managed to breed some very unique specimens indeed.

Before we go too much further, there are a couple of terms which should be explained. These terms are color, pattern and morph (also called phase). Color is the basic color of the gecko’s skin, while pattern refers to the arrangement of the spots (or in some cases, stripes) which the animal has. Out of the many different species of gecko, leopard geckos are the type which are most commonly kept as pets. Their natural docility and gentle nature makes them ideally suited for pets and they are relatively easy to care for. The most beautiful of all big cats, the elusive leopard is also the most accomplished. A marvelous hunter and opportunistic predator, the leopard hunts what others do not and resides where other cannot. With a wide geographic distribution, leopard lives everywhere yet is seen virtually nowhere owing to its supreme stealth and cunning. Smallest of the four big cats of the Panthera genus, leopard – Panthera Pardus, has a weight ranging from 80-150 lbs for the males and 65-100 lbs for the female, subject to subspecies variation.

The word leopard reflects the supposed evolutionary origin of the big cat, with the original belief being that it was a hybrid of lion (leo) and panther (pard). However, the closest resemblance is to the Jaguar, even as the leopard is less stocky and its rosette coat markings are smaller, more numerous and lack internal spots. The rosettes also distinguish it from the spots of the Cheetah. Plus leopard is a more gifted tree climber and a nocturnal hunter, whereas Cheetah prefers the less competitive daytime for his kills. Breeding Leopard Geckos can be very interesting, yet also very easy. However, there are some things to consider before you go on with the breeding process.

First and foremost, note that breeding is very hard on the female, so you need to make sure she is at least 1 year old, has a plump tail, has reached a weight of at the very least 50g, and is VERY healthy. The male should also be in perfect condition, so he does not pass any disease onto the female, or the offspring. To define a specific habitat for the leopard is impossible. It’s in fact the animal most adaptable to any kind of geographical configuration. It is at home in the forest as in the wood, in the open savannah, in the semi-desert, on the mountains or near the villages.
