Asian elephants

elephant

Asian elephants are sometimes known as Indian elephants. They are one of the three living species of elephant. Asian elephants are found mostly in India, Indochina, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants and Asian elephants also have smaller ears. This is one of the best ways to tell Asian elephants apart from African elephants. The height of an Asian elephant ranges from 7-12 feet and they weigh approximately 3.25 to 5.5 tons. There are other phusical characteristics that separate Asian elephants from their African counterparts. They have a more arched back and also have more nails on the feet. While both male and female African elephants have tusks, female Asian elephants usually do not have these tusks. Females that do have tusks often have tusks that are small and hard to see.

Behavior of Asian Elephants

Elephants travel in migratory routes that are seasonal in nature. These routes often take the Asian elephants through wet and dry zones. The oldest member of the herd is the elephant charged with remembering where the routes lead. Asian elephants live for about 60 years when they are in the wild and 80 years when they are in zoos and other captive environments. The females live in small groups that are led by the oldest female in the group. The herd that elephants travel in consists of relative elephants. Male elephants are called bull elephants. They like to travel alone and often become involved in conflicts over female elephants during the mating season. Read the rest of this entry »

Beavers in Montana

Have you ever seen a 100 pound wet rat? The first time I spotted a large male beaver on Cedar Creek, (Mineral County, Montana) that’s exactly what I thought it was. I looked again, perhaps the gangly creature waddling down the bank was a bear cub. My next thought was, where is Mama Bear?

Meeting the beaver was a unique and rather unsettling experience. Movies and cartoons have often portrayed beavers as industrious, cheeky and tenacious. Beavers are all of that, however; in the wild they are also just plain ugly.

Beaver (Castor canadensis), semi-aquatic mammals, are the largest rodents in North America, north of Panama and they are the second largest rodent in the entire world (after the capybara). They are closely related to rats, squirrels and marmots. Beavers have an average lifespan of 12-15 years, however; beavers over 20 years old are not uncommon. Mature beavers normally weigh from 40 to 60 pounds, however many will reach a weight of close to 100 lbs. Read the rest of this entry »

Snakes and their living nature

Snakes are remarkable animals, successful on land, in the sea, in forests, in grasslands, in lakes, and in deserts. Despite their sinister reputation, snakes are almost always more scared of you than you are of them. Few snakes, with the occasional exception of king cobras (Ophiophagus hannah) or black mambas (Dendroaspis polylepis), act aggressively toward a human without provocation.

Snakes have no limbs, yet all are meat eaters. They catch prey that includes insects, birds, small mammals, and other reptiles, sometimes including other snakes. Only about 400 of 3000 snake species worldwide inject venom (a poison).

Many snakes catch their prey by constriction. In constriction, a snake suffocates its prey by tightening its hold around the chest, preventing breathing or causing direct cardiac arrest. Snakes do not kill by crushing prey. Some snakes grab prey with their teeth and then swallow it whole. Read the rest of this entry »

Horse info provides some interesting facts about horses in general. Horses being herd animals are known to follow their herd leader for food and safety. This capability of a horse allows a human rider to act like a herd leader and make the horse learn and follow instructions. It takes a good amount of training with proper positive and negative inducements to make a horse compliant and easy to ride.

Since ancient times horse has always been a domestic animal. Being of domestic help, the training methods also date back to ancient times. This applies to horse breeding as well.

A herd of horses consists of a number of female horses (mares) and immature horses with just a few males (stallions.) The leader mare is called alpha mare. Read the rest of this entry »

The wide World of wolf

wolf

We humans love our pets. We dress them up, take them to doggie day cares, and even carry them around in little suitcases made especially for them. However, when these little darlings are larger than life, you may not be able to keep them with you as your arm candy. But that is okay because we still love our babies no matter how big or wild they might be. Did you know though, that Fido’s relatives are seen as predators that are feared all over the world? That is right. The wolf has for many years been seen as an aggressive animal that will attack without warning. But is this stereotype true? Can it be true of a family pet’s cousin?

Since the beginning of time, the Native Americans have been associating their lives with that of animals in the wildlife kingdom. One of the most misunderstood of these animals is the wolf. For years, the wolf has been seen as an aggressor, when in reality they are very loving and social creatures. This side of the animal was first seen by the tribes of the Americas. The Native American tribes recognized this and they have incorporated the wolf into many of their myths and legends. The wolf will forever be associated with the Native Americans, and learning more about this relationship can help one to better understand the world of Native Americans.
